Sheryl Filliater, Alaina Adams, Andrew Chapman and Jennifer Daley are the newest National Board Certified Teachers in the Phoenix Union High School District.
Filliater is a math teacher at Metro Tech, Adams is an English teacher at Maryvale, Chapman teaches science and math at Bioscience High School, and Daley is a music teacher at Cesar Chavez.
The certification, considered the teaching profession’s highest honor, is presented by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards to teachers who demonstrate, through a performance assessment, that they meet the high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do.
Phoenix Union now has 16 current National Board Certified (NBC) teachers. Filliater becomes the District’s first teacher to earn the certification in math and Chapman is the only NBCT in science. Daley is one of only two high school choir teachers in the state with the Music NBC. Adams becomes the fifth Maryvale teacher in the past five years to earn certification, equaling South Mountain for the most NBC teachers in the District.
